Manipuri culture can’t be complete without the role of Manipuri language and literature. Manipuri language has been recognised as a Modern Indian Language by the Sahitya Akademi and included in the Eight Schedule of Indian Constitution. Manipuri language is the only Tibeto Burman language in India with its own script – Meitei-Mayek. It has the status of Classical language. Literature is the backbone of Cultural Studies. In this view, the Academic Council of MUC offered a compulsory paper of Manipuri language and literature for bachelor courses up to higher classes in our University.


Aim :
The aim of Manipuri Department, MUC is to give the knowledge of cultural study and importance of Manipuri literature among the students which is to be transacted through the study of language and literature.

Scope :
Seminars, Symposiums, Workshop, Appreciation course on Puya paba and Meitei Mayek Tamba and Interactive programmes with special Guests. Participation of Literary Festivals in India and abroad (Bangladesh, Myanmar, Tripura etc. for the development of Manipuri language and Literature).

The Manipuri Department covers a wide range of topics which includes Poem, Prose, Short-stories, Essays, Novels, OldLiterature, Folkore, Travelogue, Biography, Plays and contemporary Manipuri Grammar and composition etc.
